Professor Lyrical

Professor Lyrical is an award winning emcee with a legendary pen-game. Equally compelling is his side hustle as an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Faculty Developer at the University of the District of Columbia. Lyrical is a life-long learner and "raptivist," as he was affectionately dubbed by Chuck D. of Public Enemy after they performed and spoke at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Pro earned a bachelor's in Business (Marketing/Econ) as well as a master's of science in Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and a doctorate at Northeastern University in Boston where he also taught mathematics for over seven years. This blend makes him an ideal messenger for PD at institutions of all kinds and to deliver such a smart and relevant monster breakout video like "House of Lies" that you have to see to believe.

Professor Lyrical Biography

Dr. Peter Michael Plourde

Professor Lyrical is an artist and educator known for using the positive aspects of Hip Hop culture to empower citizens to self-advocate for socioeconomic change. As a master-craftsman lyricist, he has consistently published rap records in heavy rotation among college and mix-show stations for two different groups (Invasion and X-Caliber) while winning scores of emcee battles, poetry slams, and other similar lyrical challenges along the way. Lyrical won the inaugural "Pitch & Flow" Emcee Pitch Battle for Environmentally friendly corporate start-ups at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, hosted by legends MC Lyte & DJ D-Nice, while also sharing the stage with Doug E. Fresh. Rap Legend—Chuck D. of Public Enemy—called Pro a "Rapademic Reacher" after sharing billing at Metropolitan State University in Denver for the Sankofa Speaker/Performance Series and publicly implored others to purchase his "Amazing Albook"—a book and album combo entitled "Put Em All To Shame.
Professor Lyrical earned his doctorate degree at Northeastern University (Boston, MA), where he also taught for seven years as an assistant teaching professor of mathematics in the Foundation Year first-year cohort. His dissertation and subsequent research interest is "Increasing STEM degree attainment for underrepresented populations." In the classroom, Professor "Lyrical" Plourde has achieved similar distinction while developing his academic credentials lending to his speaking and performance appeal as a versatile Hip Hop artist, professional developer, and featured/keynote speaker. To date, Pro has spoken and performed at over 100 college and universities (as well as various k-12 institutions), taught over 100 college and university courses, and has recorded and published over 100 songs as a Hip Hop/Spoken Word/Rap recording artist.
Lyrical is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of the District of Columbia (where he also directs faculty development for its Community College campus) and was recently named a 2021 QuSTEAM-IBM-HBCU Quantum Education Faculty Scholar. In addition to his doctorate, he also holds a master of mathematics and a bachelor of business administration with concentrations in marketing and economics from UMass-Lowell.
